Parrots( 鹦鹉 ) are becoming one of the most popular pets( 供玩赏的动物 ) in America-and for good reason.
The parrot is an extraordinary bird thatcan be taught to talk, can be easily cared for, and can create a livelyatmosphere anywhere. With the help of an energetic parrot owner, aparrot can develop an enormous vocabulary. In addition,a parrot can betrained to say "Pretty boy"or "Polly wants a cracker", and it also canlearn to whistle or sing.No matter what an owner decides to teach abird, training a parrot takes much patience, but the reward is a streamof chatter.
Another reason for the parrot's popularity is that this petdoes not require much care. For example, even a spoiled parrot does notneed a bousesitter for the purpose of daily walks and daily feeding. Infact ,a parrot owner may leave his or her pet with enough food for fivedays and have no fear that the parrot will overeat . Still anotheradvantage of owning a parrot is its inexpensive food , including seeds, nuts, corn, and grain-along with an apple, banana,or carrot. Perhaps the
most likely reason the parrot is becoming such a well-liked pet is thatit is a combination of tameness and wildness.
Because the parrot canlive in almost any environment,it makes a fine, tame companion for manypeople. In addition ,because it can be easily trained,it is a delihgtfulperformer. At the same time, its colorful feathers give it an air of themystery of the parrots' native home, the jungle. Thus, the parrot, once ahighly valued gift presented to kings and noble families,is nowappreciated by a growing number of people.

  (2) Third World countries often mistakenly decide to permit rapidindustrialization. When this industrialization occurs, many new factoriesopen, and workers get jobs.Unfortunately.many of these new jobs are notpermanent. The leaders of an industry want their factories to be asproductive as possible, and they will do anything to achieve that goal.Whenever they can ,they take advantage of automation, which means thatworkers aer replaced by a more efficient machine. As a result, a workertrained for a specific factory job becomes unemployed, and the profitsof the factory owners are maximized.
Many experts in Third World economics are concerned about rapidindustrialization because it brings problems as well as progress.Citizens of these countries need jobs that will last, not jobs that aretemporary. In the opinion of these economists, the leaders of Third Worldcountries should be aware of the dangers as well as the advantages ofrapid industrialization.

(3)Perhaps the world's most pressing problem is shortage of food, particularly of foods rich in proteins( 蛋白质 )Traditional sources ofproteins are meat, fish, eggs and dairy products. Cereals( 谷类 ) such aswheat and rice contain protein but in much smaller amounts.
Most protein in underdeveloped countries comes from cereals.Australians eat about 60 grams of protein a day;the average Indian islucky if he gets10 grams.
In a place like India, the protein is not distributed evenly. Children, who need it most, often get the least. This causes serious malnutrition(营养不良)which results in underdeveloped bodies. The brzin isparticularly affected so that children,if they survive( 活下来 ) , oftengrow into mentally retarded( 迟钝 )adults.
Studies have shown that about half a hectare( 公顷 )of land is neededper head of population to provide a minimum adequate diet( 适合的饮食 ) .Australia at present farms almost one hectare per head of population.
The world has 3200 million hectares of land available for farming.Simple arithmetic shows that this can support a population of 1600million people.Even if we farm with four times the efficiency, therewill still be many starving people by the year 2000 when the duced is used to feed cattle, poultry and pigs. For example , it isestimated that a bullock(小公牛 )needs to consume 20 kilograms of grainto produce only one kilogram of beef.

(4)Most of the people who appear most often and most gloriously in thehistory books are great conquerors, generals, and soldiers, whereas thepeople who really helped civilization( 文明 )move forward are often nevermentioned at all.We do not know who first launched a seaworthy boat, orwho calculated the length of the year, but we know all about the killersand destroyers.People think a great deal of them,so much so that on allthe highest pillars (柱子)in the great cities of the world you will findthe figure of a conqueror,a general,or a soldier. And I think most people believe that the greatest countries are those that have beaten inbattle the greatest number of other countries and ruled over them asconquerors. It is just possible that they are the greatest, but they arenot the most civilized.Animals fight;so do savages;hence to be good atfighting is to be good in the way in which an animal or a savage isgood ,but it is not to be civilized.Even being good at getting otherpeople to fight for you and telling them how to do it most efficiently- this ,after all ,is what conquerors and generals have done- is notbeing civilized.People fight to settle quarrels. Fighting means killing ,and civilized peoples ought to be able to find some way of settlingtheir disputes( 争端 )other than by seeing which side can kill off thegreater number of the other side, and then saying that that side whichhas killed most has won.And not only that it has won, but, because it haswon,it has been in the right. For that is what going to war means; it means saying that might is right.

56.The author believes that history books--
a.should say more about those who launched boats and calculated thelength of the year
